It was a race against the light with Tao and Yoon in Canmore Alberta last summer! I headed out to Canmore, only to have my family and friends text me that there was a huge grass fire closing off the highway in both directions, and that traffic might be backed up as they detoured. After chatting with Yoon, deciding what we should do… we all decided to keep going! Suddenly everything came into view and I saw the huge smoke cloud blanketing the highway, with cars suddenly stopping and sitting there with nowhere to go. My heart sank. Not only was I stuck in this traffic jam watching the beautiful world around me burn, but we literally had the most EPIC sunset and it was disappearing right before my eyes. A 15 minute drive down the highway to our meeting spot suddenly took me almost two hours!

We were detoured to Bow Valley Trail, and this is the view of Highway 1 as about 5 helicopters were fighting the fire that shut down the highway in both directions. The traffic was unbelievable.

Tao and Yoon were so incredibly sweet while they waited for me to arrive. I insisted we shoot whatever we could, it just seemed so much darker when I got there so I was trying to give myself some grace – I just wish we had more time together! But with this soft dreamy light… OH MY!! Everyone knows I’m a sucker for that glow, but what we were able to capture in the 25-30 minutes – this session turned out to be one of my favourites! And the light was to die for!
